How an Elko Courthouse Wedding Works

Elko Courthouse Wedding Guide

If you’re planning an Elko Courthouse wedding, the process is simple, but you do need to know the steps in advance. First, go together to the Elko County Clerk’s Office (third floor of the courthouse annex) during weekday business hours to get your marriage license. Bring a valid ID and be ready to move forward the same day.

Then, schedule your ceremony. The judge performs weddings during regular court hours when the calendar allows. However, after regular court hours, the judge performs ceremonies by appointment only. Also, the judge cannot perform your ceremony unless you already have your license and have paid the $100 fee to the Elko Justice Court.

How an Elko Courthouse Wedding Works

Once everything is in place, your Elko Courthouse wedding moves quickly. After the ceremony, the judge signs and hands you a marriage certificate. In addition, another copy gets recorded with your license at the Elko County Recorder’s Office on the second floor within ten days.

Many couples ask if they can personalize things—and the answer is yes, just keep it simple. For example, one of my couples chose to get married on the courthouse steps, and it turned out beautiful. I highly recommend that option if you want something a little more open and natural.

Also, plan ahead for timing, bring only what you need, and expect a short, meaningful ceremony.

After Your Elko Courthouse Wedding

After your Elko Courthouse wedding, you can make the day your own. One of my favorite weddings ended with a backyard reception. It was small, intentional, and full of energy—great food, yard games, and everyone actually on the dance floor.

If you go this route, choose a yard with some shade. You want a mix of sun and coverage, plus flat ground for tables and chairs. You can rent everything locally, and honestly, a food truck works great—Kingdom Grub is one of my favorites.

Also, don’t overcomplicate it. Skip the DJ if you want, rent speakers, and focus on the experience. And most importantly, invest in a photographer and artwork. An album, especially, tells the full story of your Elko Courthouse wedding in a way nothing else can.
