A Winter Lamoille Session

Winter maternity sessions can feel intimidating at first, but this one turned out to be such a good reminder of why I love photographing in Lamoille year-round. The trees were bare, the sky was overcast, and the landscape looked completely different from how it does in summer — and yet, it worked. Sometimes you just have to lean into the season you’re given.
This couple had never had professional photos done before, which is something I hear more often than you’d think. They were excited, but definitely a little nervous when we started. That’s always my cue to slow things down and make space for them to relax. Sessions in Lamoille don’t need to feel big or overwhelming. They can be quiet and easy, even in the middle of winter.
Finding Locations During a Lamoille Winter
Because it was winter, we didn’t have lush greenery or full trees to work with. Instead, we used what was there. A tree is down someone’s driveway. A simple tree in someone’s yard. And of course, the mountain views that make Lamoille feel like home no matter the season.
Winter sessions here are all about paying attention. Clean lines. Open space. Soft backgrounds. The lack of foliage actually helps in some ways — nothing distracts from the people in front of the camera. The mountain still showed up beautifully, even under a gray sky, and grounding the session near the Lamoille Mountain tied everything together.
Helping Clients Feel Comfortable
Since this was their first professional session, my main goal was to help them forget the camera was even there. At first, there was some stiffness — totally normal. We talked, laughed, and kept things moving. I gave gentle direction without over-posing. By the end, they were relaxed, laughing, and actually enjoying themselves.
Her maternity dress choice also played a big role. The color palette she picked worked so well against the winter tones. It stood out without feeling loud, and it photographed beautifully against the muted landscape around Lamoille. Choosing the right outfit really does matter, especially in seasons where color is limited.
Photography Tips for Winter Sessions in Lamoille
Winter sessions — especially overcast ones — require a photographer who truly understands light. Shooting in Lamoille during winter means knowing how to find clean light even when the sky is flat, and the landscape feels empty. That kind of light doesn’t just show up. You have to look for it.
This is where experience matters. Knowing how to position clients, how to read subtle shifts in light, and how to avoid muddy tones takes time and practice. It’s especially important in places like Lamoille, where winter conditions can change quickly, and foliage isn’t there to help soften things.

By the end of this maternity shoot, they were laughing, relaxed, and fully in it. That’s always the goal. Winter or summer, first session or tenth, Lamoille always has a way of creating something meaningful when you slow down and trust the process.
- This session was simple, honest, and such a good reminder that beautiful photos don’t depend on perfect seasons — just connection, comfort, and knowing how to work with what’s in front of you.
